As the weather gets nicer and the days stretch a bit longer here in England, many could be planning their first bikepacking adventure they have been putting off for quite some time. When it comes to packing for the first time for such a trip, it's easy to feel overwhelmed. After doing my first bikepacking trip with my friends through the stunning Yorkshire Dales in England, I decided to write this blog to walk you through some of the top tips I learned along the way and the essential items you need to pack for a stress-free bikepacking experience. You will mainly need to think of the 5 main areas: storage, hydration, nutrition, shelter, and clothing.

1. Bikepacking Bags

Before we dive into some specifics, let’s talk about the foundation of your gear: bikepacking bags. These specialized bags are designed to fit seamlessly on your bike, allowing you to carry everything you need without compromising your ride.

You might fit one bag on the bike or more than one, depending on how long your trip will be and how many items you are planning to carry. If you are cycling as a group, you can share some bulky items like the tend which we will come to later in this article. Here are some recommended bags you’ll want to invest in:

  • Saddle Bag to securely attach to your bike’s seat post. It’s perfect for stashing your sleeping bag, spare clothes, and other lightweight items.

  • Frame Bag to fit within your bike’s triangle frame. It’s ideal for storing heavier gear like tools, food, and cooking equipment.

  • Handlebar Bag to provide you with easy access to snacks, maps, and other essentials.

  • Top Tube Bag to keep your phone, wallet, and small valuables within reach.
